Organizational Analysis
Daniel A. McFarland
In this introductory course, you will learn multiple theories of organizational behavior and apply them to actual cases of organizational change.
I hope you are enjoying this week's topic on organizational learning!
A couple students sent me a link to a World of Warcraft video that I want to share with all of you. The video does a nice job illustrating how a warring party plans a strategy, analyzes data, and coordinates participants efforts. It also shows - in a humorous way - how collective problem solving can be undermined by a single player. Here is the link (note it has some strong language).
In case you missed it, you can also find the John Seely Brown video here. I am not sure I agree with him that a high level WoW player is a better hire than an MBA. I think he's mostly trying to be provocative there. However, I think some of his points ring clear for very advanced players who undergo difficult quests. There is something about these online games that get participants to commit many hours of their time, coordinate in complex ways, and collectively learn to solve difficult problems. It's an open question as to whether such a model could be implemented in contexts like businesses, schools or even open online courses so they become learning organizations. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how it can or cannot be done.
Don't forget to up-vote posts and threads that you find most interesting - I look forward to discussing them in the Screen Side Chat!
All best,
Dan
